Painted by Utagawa Toyokuni II, circa 1833-34 (Tempo 4-5).
This work depicts people gazing at snow capped Mount Fuji from a temple lodging. The view of Mount Fuji from the lodging vividly conveys the scene of orship and pilgrimage to Mount Fuji. Many worshippers are depicted within the temple grounds, including those wearing white robes and hats woven from rush and straw. In "Evening Snow," Mount Fuji towers behind the shrine building. The snowy landscape at dusk is partially covered in snow, but rather than depicting it pure white, the folds of the mountain are depicted with light ink, creating a realistic and innovative expression. Utagawa Toyokuni II's works mainly consist of portraits, making this landscape painting extremely valuable.
